Barry Le Va, born 1941 in Long Beach, California, lives and works in New York. His work has been exhibited extensively since the late 60´s. In 1988, a retrospective of his work was mounted by the Carnegie-Mellon in Pittsburgh. It travelled to New Port, Atlanta and Purchase, New York. Barry Le Va was invited to present his work at three Documentas in Kassel (V, VI, VII). He has worked with legendary gallerists such as the Ileana Sonnabend in New York, Fred Jahn in Munich and the Rolf Ricke in Cologne.

First and foremost, Barry Le Va is a sculptor. Ever since one of his scattered felt pieces appeared on the cover of ARTFORUM in November 1968 and promptly caused a controversy, his work has become increasingly complex. In the past 40 years, Le Va has created a unique vocabulary, remarkable for its clarity, elegance and intelligence. His sculptures examine the relationship of order and chaos - they are an interrogation of space and body. In 2004, Barry Le Va will have retrospective exhibitions at the ICA in Philadelphia and at the Museu de Serralves in Porto (touring).
